Class Highlights

I think there is a long list of new things which I have learned from this class. My whole perspective of viewing media has been changed after taking this class. And the most amazing thing is Pakistani media is alot different from American media. I found American media lot more complicated and interesting then Pakistani media by all means.
I learned lots of new  terms used in media such as Green wash, pseudo events, stringers, Spyware (the scary term) etc. There were many discussions in the class which I did not know about and I searched for them after the discussion. I felt like before this class I was totally out of this world. =D
It was so intersting to know that people in this class knew most of the current events and all of them had different opinion about it. To look at each topic from different point of veiw developed an interest in me to think outside the box. I think a quater is a real short time to get to know so many interesting people with their different perspectives on  media.
I Came to know about South Park, Paris Hilton, and the history of media from this class. I learned that media have both negative and positive effects on people, it is totally upto people how they take the message.
Last but not least the presentations were the best part of this class specially the Presentation on the censorship of interenet in Iran.

Media Ethics

Lawyers and judges made a series of blunders using social websites in 2009.  Judges “friended” lawyers they should not have.  Lawyers blogged about matters they should not have. The Philadelphia Bar issued an ethics opinion condemning as “deception” a lawyer’s conduct in making a “friend request” of a witness in order to obtain access to the witness’s Facebook page where, it was hoped, the lawyer could find useful evidence.  [First edit:  The Electronic Frontier Foundation has filed an FOIA suit to obtain government documents, including DOJ documents, relating to investigations, fact-gathering, and surveillance using social websites.  If email has been "where the best facts are," then social websites are catching up fast.]

According to me it is Privacy matter, these people should keep their personal an proffesional life apart from each other alos it is misappropriate that people are catching up each other on such sites.

Propaganda in Advertising

Kmart advertisement uses the  following propaganda technique
COMMON MAN: They want people to come and buy from there  so that is why they choose common people who are suggesting other people to come and shop from them. The common people telling  that it is good and cheap to do christmas shopping from Kmart, they can find everything from Kmart.
GLITTERING GENERALITIES: They used their slogan "There is smart and there is Kmart smart" which is reffering that people will get cheap and better things from Kmart and it is a smart decision to buy from there. And they invite other people to come and buy from them.

INTERNET

There are 293 sites listed, I am not sure may be I miscounted. I know only 14 sites out of the listed ones but I don't use all of them. I know one web site which is not listed there fropper.com. It is just like facebook or other social  networking site. It is mainly for people from India and pakistan but there are people from America and other countries too. There are many sites listed which I never heard of but I look for Bebo. It is just like other social networking site where users can post blogs, video, music, photographs and questionaires which other user may answer.
I used Facebook and Orkut alot for keeping in touch with my friends and family. I started getting addicted to them when I came to U.S in 2008, I was on computer 24/7. Chatting with my friends and family which I left behind, sharing my pictures and watching their pictures and playing games. I wasn't even getting along to my new life in here, I was having trouble in adjusting my school too. So I decided to delete Facebook and Orkut, and I am glad I did.

BOOKS

There are so many books which  had a great influence on my life and it is so hard for me to write the name of only three books out of those. I started reading books in the Freshman year of high school before that I was not into books at all except my course books. And now I am a heavy reader who can easily finish a books in two or three weeks.
Tell me your Dreams by Sydney Sheldon was the very first book which changed my perspective towards books. The book was about three different girls who worked in a same company, there were so many murders in the beginning of the book and which made the story more interesting. As the story draws to the conclusion those three girls were proven to be one in the same. Sydney shelton provided a fascinating examination of different aspect of Multiple Personality Disorder through the character of those girls. After reading this novel I got interested in Psychology and searched about it and decided to take Psychology as my major.
Another book which grabbed my full attention was  A Thousand Splendid suns by Khalid Hosseini. This book was about two Afghani women, Mariam and Laila whose life was twisted up with the history of  recent war in their country. I felt so bad for them, that how they had to suffer such hardships in such young age.
Does My Head Look Big In This by Randa Abdel-Fatteh palyed a major role in my life. This book was a about a girl Amal a sixteen years old Australian-Palestinian-Muslim who decided to wear Hijab (veil) full time in her high school Junior year. The way she made a decision and stood on it gave me confidence. I read this book in the end of my high school year and started to wear hijab (head scarf) in college full time.

Media Impact

My personal believe is that violent TV shows are  having very negative impact on people. Specially such shows on kids channels (e.g Cartoon Network: Destroy Build Destroy and Dude What would Happen?) is the worst of all. I actually applied laboratory experiment it on my cousins to show my aunt and uncle the impact long before this project because I was totally against watching them such shows.
In the beginning I let them watch the show daily, and then I suggested them to watch it on YouTube the ones they missed. Then I bought CD of these shows they really addicted to, I was constantly observing their behaviour. I saw  speeding aggressiveness in them, they build different sort of thing on Lego's and destroy them with such aggressiveness they throw them hard on flour to destroy them. They build things with pieces of wood and plastic and destroy them with something hard.
Also they different things such as  food and washing powder  after mixing them they  try to throw it on each other with such question WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?
I kept record of all these things and even made movies to show all these things to my uncle and aunt. They also discussed their behavioral changes with me. And in the end we came up to this conclusion that we will not let them watch these shows again. These shows are totally banned in our house.

Media Autobiography

My relationship with media is not so huge even though I opened my eyes in the world of advanced media. Like every other kid I was exposed with all eight types of mass media, but most of the time I interact with television and Internet.
Television besides entertainment gives me so much information, I like to watch different documentaries on television, news and other sports information. The thing I  like about television is I can easily watch what is going on in my country through our news channels. I can easily get to know what is in in the fashion and what could happen next in my country. I am update with the help of television about my country. And it is part of my daily life.
Internet on the other hand I use almost everyday. I use it for my resaerch work, for downloading songs, to socialize with people, for news and for any other purpose which makes my life easier. The things I do not like on internet is playing games. Which is really addicting for some people and I don't get this why? I like to get new information and learn about new thing through it. It makes life easier in the sense of research work, which I do alot.
I wasn't so much into books except my course books until I read this book called Tell Me Your Dreams by Sydney Shelton. I found this book so intersting that I  decided to take psychology as my major. So now anyone can guess that my exposure to books was pretty late. Now I like reading books but only fiction and some times history books related to kings and queens.
I watch movies  but not that much. Most of the times movies create influence on people but not on me.I just watch movies for fun and to pass my time. I really like to watch Indian movies they are pretty fun to watch. And I don't like violent movies. I record songs in my ipod and in my cell phone besides that i do not have any interest in recording.
I used to listen  radio back in my country Pakistan, and I was kind of addicted to it. Here in U.S.A I only listen to MPR and that is only if I am in my car. MPR is a pretty informative radio channel.
I usually don't read newspapers and magazines, because I get all news through television and Internet. I usually read news of Pakistan From Jung and Dawn through Internet. I watch Geo, ARY, Dawn, Express news channels. Magazines I only read when I get some extra time and I don't have any particular magazines to read. I don't like such magazines which makes gilrs more complexed about their diet and how they look.
To me television and internet is most important and interesting mass media and I would like to work in radio station in my own country. This is kind of my dream but I know I can not do it that is why I am doing psychology as a major and i will transfer to Berkely University
